Kitchen remodel cost in San Diego: the published figures

Every kitchen is priced on its own, so no page can tell you what yours will cost. What it can do is show the published figures, explain what pushes a San Diego job above or below them and set out how payments work under California law. Use them to read the written estimates you get, not to replace them.

What it costsCost

Kitchen Remodel San Diego is a referral service: it connects homeowners with independent local remodelers and is not a contractor.

Published averages for the Pacific region

The Cost vs Value report, published by Zonda through the Journal of Light Construction, prices the same defined projects across the country. Its 2025 Pacific region figures are below (Cost vs Value 2025, Pacific).

ProjectAverage job costResale valueCost recouped
Minor kitchen remodel, midrange$29,728$38,384129.1%
Major kitchen remodel, midrange$86,480$49,46757.2%
Major kitchen remodel, upscale$171,950$66,77838.8%

For comparison, the same report’s national averages for 2025 are $28,458 for a midrange minor remodel, $82,793 for a midrange major remodel and $164,104 for an upscale major remodel.

Why there is no San Diego figure

The report covers five California cities: Los Angeles, Fresno, Modesto, Sacramento and San Francisco. San Diego is not one of them, so the Pacific region average is the published number that includes the county. Treat it as a starting point and expect real bids to differ.

What homeowners told Houzz they spent

The Houzz 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, published in January 2026 from 1,780 homeowners, found a median spend of $55,000 on a major kitchen remodel: $75,000 for larger kitchens and $46,000 for smaller ones. The median for a minor remodel was $20,000 (Houzz 2026). Houzz counts a remodel as major when at least all the cabinets and appliances are replaced (Houzz 2025).

Houzz medians are national and come from what owners reported, while Cost vs Value prices a fixed project list. That is why the two sets of numbers differ. Neither is a quote.

What moves the price in San Diego

Layout

Keeping the sink, range and refrigerator where they are keeps plumbing, gas and electrical work small. Moving them, or opening a wall in a Clairemont or Bay Park galley kitchen, adds trades, permits and inspections, and a structural wall adds an engineer’s time.

Cabinets and counters

Cabinet grade, from stock to custom, often makes the largest single difference; see kitchen cabinets in San Diego. Counter material, size, seams and edge work come next; see countertops in San Diego.

Appliances

A standard range and refrigerator cost far less than built-in, panel-ready units, which can also need custom cabinet work around them.

The house itself

Older houses in North Park, Kensington or Golden Hill can need a panel upgrade, new circuits or new supply pipe once the walls are open. Those costs are hard to see before demolition, so ask how the contract prices surprises.

Permits, rules and design

Permit and inspection fees, design fees and HOA or condo rules all add cost. A downtown or Mission Valley high-rise can limit work hours and require a booked freight elevator, which stretches the schedule.

Resale value against the cost

In the 2025 Pacific figures, the midrange minor remodel recouped 129.1 percent of its cost at resale, while the midrange major remodel recouped 57.2 percent and the upscale major remodel 38.8 percent. A smaller remodel tends to pay back more of what it costs; a larger one is usually done for the way you live, not for the sale price.

How payments work in California

  • A home improvement contract over $500 must be in writing and signed before work begins.
  • The down payment may not exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less.
  • Later payments follow a schedule and may not run ahead of the work done or the materials delivered.
  • CSLB advises homeowners not to pay cash and not to let payments get ahead of the work.
  • You have three business days to cancel a home improvement contract, or five if you are 65 or older.

Worth knowing

Each remodeler sets their own price. This site gives no prices and no estimates; a remodeler gives you their own in writing.

Comparing estimates

CSLB suggests getting at least three written bids based on the same plans, specifications and scope of work, and not automatically taking the lowest (CSLB). Line them up and check what each one includes:

  • Demolition, haul-away and protection of floors and other rooms
  • Cabinets, counters, backsplash and hardware, by line or allowance
  • Plumbing, electrical and gas work, and any panel upgrade
  • Permit and inspection fees
  • Patching, painting and final cleanup
  • Start and end dates and the payment schedule
